Earth Day and OK

We celebrated Earth Day with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades this afternoon in the gym. The students took recyclable items (boxes, cans, plastic bottles, etc.) and built a variety of objects including robots, boats, rocket ships, and more. They had a lot of fun. Check out a few photos:

The 2nd graders have also been reading nonstop. We enjoyed a book the other day called The OK Book. We noticed from the book that the letters OK (which we also learned in sign language) when turned sideways looked like a stick person.

The character in the book was "an OK pancake flipper" and "an OK tree climber" among other things. The students made their own journal entries. They looked something like this:

I'm an OK driver

I'm an OK climber.

I'm OK at playing with my dad.

It was fun. They are so creative!

Enjoy the weekend! Good luck to our soccer teams on Saturday.

Library Field Trip

Today's field trip was a lot of fun! We ventured downtown to the Harold Washington Library. (I wish I had taken some pictures!)

The students explored the Children's floor, listened to a couple of books about the library, and checked out some books.

*Please note the students' books are due back to the library by May 15th. You can either return them to any of the public library branches (http://www.chipublib.org/), or you can send the books to school, and I will return them to the library.

This class loves reading. Please keep encouraging them to read at home. Remember with their library cards they can go and check out more books. This will be especially helpful in the summer when they do not have daily access to our classroom library.

Thank You!

Thank you for bringing your child to First Reconciliation tonight. It was beautiful to watch them receive the sacrament.

Please remember to mark your calendars for First Communion - Saturday, May 11th - 10:30am. I will send home more details soon about practices once I hear more from Fr. Felipe. Please email me, send in a note, or call the school if you have any questions. (Thank you.)

Field Trip Photos - Children's Museum

The students had a blast at our field trip on Thursday! Ask your child about his or her favorite parts.

Enjoy some photos from the trip:

Dressing up like fire fighters - these girls are ready!
The fire truck is on its way!

We took the "Super Power Challenge" and we were super-charged when we filled up the card. So fun!

Miss Foyle's group getting super-charged!
Miss Longton at work in the tool shop with students

Digging for bones- just like paleontologists!

Standing still to see if butterflies would land on their heads!
The beautiful atrium with plants and fountains where we ate lunch.

Water Waves - they got a little wet

Climbing up and around...

If any parents have pictures from the trip, please email me (foyleolu@gmail.com), and I will post those pictures too!

Visualizing... and Making Geometric Solids

It's hard to believe we have already started the month of April. April is National Poetry Month, but all of the classes at St. Ann are learning how to visualize.

In second grade we discussed how a book can be like a movie in our minds. We think about what we see, taste, hear, smell, and feel when we read. We have also been building our stamina while reading to ourselves and reading with buddies.

Here are a couple of books we have used to help us become more familiar with the idea of visualizing:

Duck! Rabbit! (Rosenthal) - Which animal do you see?

Make Van Gogh's Bed (Appel & Guglielmo) - Touch the art! See and feel the paintings!

The students had some pretty creative responses for what they saw when they looked at this picture. What do you see?

As far as the rest of the day goes, we've been learning about geometric solids (3D shapes) in Math. We read a book called Mummy Math on Monday and made some observations about the shapes. Tuesday we actually built the shapes out of toothpicks and gum drops. We counted faces (the flat surfaces of shapes), edges (where faces meet) and vertices (where edges meet). Look at some photos from our classroom. The students were able to play around with the toothpicks and gum drops to create their own shapes after we finished the lesson.

Mummy Math (Neuschwander) - a lesson in geometric solids

Our shape chart to record our observations, toothpicks (edges), and gum drops (vertices)

"Look! I made a campfire!"

Counting the edges of the pyramid...

"I made a hexagon!"

Our fingers got a little sticky...

A dancing person :)

In other subjects we are working on:
Persuasive Letters (Writing)
Preparing for Reconciliation (Religion)
Open and Closed Syllable Words and Words with AU, AW, AL (Phonics/Spelling)
Economics (Social Studies)

We are excited for the field trip on Thursday to Navy Pier to see the Children's Museum!

Welcome Back - Announcements for the Week

Welcome back from spring break!

Here are a few reminders for the week:

--> Thursday (April 11th) = Field trip to the Children's Museum at Navy Pier
Thank you to everyone who already turned in their permission slips and money. This will be an educational and exciting day for first and second grade!

--> Thursday = Report Card Pickup
Please stop by downstairs after school to sign and pick up your child's report card.

--> Conferences
If the school contacts you for a conference with me, please come at your scheduled time. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child's progress and steps for continued improvement over the last quarter of school and summer to prepare for third grade in the fall. (Please note: not everyone will have a spring conference; however, if you want to meet with me, please contact me directly or through the school office. Thank you!)

--> Mass
Please make sure you take your child to Mass every weekend. It is extremely important as they prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation (April 20th) and First Communion (May 11th). Thank you.
